Oysters

Whitstable has been known for its oysters for centuries, and you’ll find them on menus across town, from harbour huts to long-established oyster bars.

The harbour

A working harbour with a fish market, the Harbour Market huts and the South Quay Shed, plus boat trips and a sea sauna.

Beaches and The Street

Whitstable’s beaches are shingle, calm and face west, which is why the sunsets are famous. Colourful beach huts line Tankerton Slopes. The Street is a natural shingle spit running out to sea from Tankerton. You can only walk it around low tide, so check the tide times first. The Street is a short walk up the coast from the beach.

Whitstable Rocks Oyster Festival

In 2026 the festival ran from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September, with fireworks, the Landing of the Oysters, the Mud Tug o’ War and free family activities. The 2027 dates have not been announced yet. Some older websites still list the festival in July, but it now takes place in September. See the official festival website.

Eat and drink

Seafood is the big draw. Well-known names include the Whitstable Oyster Company, Wheelers Oyster Bar and The Lobster Shack, and The Sportsman at nearby Seasalter has a Michelin star. Booking ahead is wise in summer and at weekends.

Shops and arts

Harbour Street is lined with independent shops. The Horsebridge Arts Centre and the Whitstable Community Museum are both worth a look.

Walking and cycling

The Crab and Winkle Way runs about 7.5 miles, mostly traffic-free, between Whitstable and Canterbury.

Parking

Free parking behind the building, subject to availability: usually one space per apartment. It isn’t guaranteed, and bays marked Resident Parking belong to permanent residents and must not be used.

Vans: smaller work vans are fine. Larger vans are not: no Luton bodies, no long wheelbase and nothing tall. If you’re arriving in anything bigger than an ordinary transit-sized van, please ask us first.

Other options: on-street parking where permitted on Canterbury Road, Grimshill Road, Cromwell Road and St John’s Road (check the restrictions before leaving the car), or the paid car parks at Whitstable Station, Victoria Street and Gorrell Tank.

Journey times and timetables change, so please check with the operators before you travel.
